On 31st of July, during mat time the staff talked about Olympics Games to the children that happened in London. The staff showed and explained to the children about the Olympics flag. The staff explained to the children that there are five rings in the Olympics flag with five different colours (blue, yellow, black, green and red). The staff said there are varieties of games such as summing, running, diving, cycling, soccer, etc which competed by internationally all over the world. The staff said to the children that he is going to show some of the Olympics Games on YouTube. The staff joined the laptop on a LCD television and showed some of the Olympic Games to the children such as diving, swimming, and athletics.  After that the staff closed the laptop and showed to the children the Olympics Games lives on television channel.

As the children were watching Olympics Games on YouTube I noticed some of the children remember the activities they did with their family and friends. Some of the children said they ran with their family in the park last week. Some of the children said they like swimming and they joined the swimming programme. When they saw diving part on YouTube, some of the children said they know how to dive. This shows that technology and interactive media are enhance young children’s cognitive, social, emotional and language development (NAEYC, 2012).

Not all children know about the Olympics Games that is happening in London. However when they had an opportunity to watch Olympics lives on television and on YouTube, they are aware that an Olympics game is happening in London. Children gained experience and knowledge from using media and computer. According to Te Whāriki “children gain experiences in using communication technologies such as calculators, books and computers” (Ministry of Education, 1996, p.97). Media and computers increase children’s vocabulary and communication skills.

After mat time, all the children were willing to try Olympics activities in the centre. We set up some activities for children just like the Olympics Games that is happening in London. Activities such as running, obstacle course racing, water balance racing, scooter board racing and basketball shooting. All the children were excited to try all these activities after what they seen on television and YouTube. I noticed that media influences children’s interests and behaviour. According to Charlesworth (2008) television shows can inspire children to try new activities and impact on their behaviour.

After mat time the staff closed the television. In our centre we let children watch television sometimes during mat time and during rest time (20 minutes, everyday). During rest time we put on appropriate cartoons dvds. We are aware that media has negative impacts on children as well as positive impacts. When children spend too much time on the television, they become lazy to play outside or they would not be active. That is why we limited the time on watching television. We do not let children watch inappropriate television shows because we believe that media has great impact on children learning both negatively and positively. According to NAEYC (2012) when we use technology and media wisely it can supports with children learning. Similarly New Zealand Curriculum (2007) stated technology has impacts on the cultural, environmental and ethics.

If we let children watch television too long it has negative impact on children physically, emotionally, and socially. Children will become very lazy; they are not going to participate in active plays or outdoor activities. They will not interact with other children therefore the children will lose confidence. NAEYC (2012) states that media has negative impact on children such as irregular sleep patterns, behavioral issue, negative impact in socialization and language development.

Nice reflection and well written. I like the way how your centre used technology and media to support children learning. You are right that not every children know and aware of the Olympic Games that was happened in London. When your centre provided media for children to watch Live Olympic Games, your centre provide opportunity for children to see what is Olympic Games, how is it work. Also it is a great program for children to watch because children are influenced by media and it inspire them to try new activities. They like to do things that they saw on Television therefore that program encourage children to do physical activities. I like how your centre implemented Olympic activities for children in your centre. This is a great opportunity for children to experience in different activities and also it is enhance their development and learning. Through those physical activities children gained fundamental movement skills,, developed gross motor skills and also they will increase in an individual confidence and self esteem (Exeter, 1999).

  2. Tumeke Ayesu! Great first reflection.
Very nice use of references to back up your ideas. I liked the use of technology to keep up with current events.
It was nice to see that the children used what they learnt by watching the Olympics on TV when they played their own games. It reminds me of what my centre did as they competed in their own Preschool Olympics with gold medals that they made themselves.
It's nice to see that while you talked about the benefits of having the television and laptop in the centre, you also discussed the negative side effects of continuously using electronic technology with children. My centre uses the television only on very special occasions, when the children have behaved and if children have arrived at the centre with movies from home, so it's interesting that your centre watches the television for 20 minutes each day.
    Good job once again!

  3. Ka pai Ayesu! Finally you are on the move. Well presented reflection and is different from others too. I like the idea of letting children watch what was happening in London, Olympic games as well as talking about the postive and negative effects of watching TV. Using TV is a good idea for our children to have knowledge about what is happening in their world. It is true that TV is where most of the children learn vocabulary and communication skills from their early age. It is the most influential technology that the media is using to deliver their perspectives about anything in our world. There are hinden messages we cannot see and hear about unless we watch TV. It is good that your centre uses TV for 20 minutes every day but hopefully your centre is not using TV to babysit children. My centre handly use our TV. Another good thing with your centre they let children practiced what they watched by playing some physical games. My centre planned to have a day out in the park during Olympic games but nothing happened. Wonderful Ayesu.

  4. Tino pai!It is an awesome reflection! I am glad to hear that what kind of technology centres have to support and and extend children's learning. it is good to see that staff and you are being activity involved in children's learning as well initiating to stimulate their interest. My centre only uses the television on children especially on rainning days or on special occasions.I agree that the children need to be exposed to different sitmulation on chidren's learning and development. As far as children need educators guidance to support them using different technology in the centres. When educators interacts with the children using technology, their attention draw immediately to explore and investigate them. According to Smort(1999) tcchnology is about assisting people and solving problem. Thanks Ayesu!
